The South Carolina Supreme Court has struck down a ban on abortion after cardiac activity is detected — typically around six weeks. The court issued a 3-2 decision Thursday saying the restriction enacted by the Deep South state violates a state constitutional right to privacy. The law banned abortions after cardiac activity is detected, typically around six weeks into a pregnancy — with exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape and incest or those that endanger a patient’s life. Currently, Republican Gov. Henry McMaster signed the measure into law nearly two years ago. On Twitter, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre applauded the justices for ruling against what she called South Carolina's “extreme and dangerous abortion ban.”

法案加强明尼苏达的堕胎权by codifying protections into state statutes has passed its first test. A House health panel approved the legislation 11-8 Thursday on just the third day of the 2023 session, and sent it to its next committee stop on an expedited path to a House floor vote. Backers hope to put the bill on Democratic Gov. Tim Walz’s desk by the end of the month. As lawmakers across the country begin to reconvene, they’re getting their first chances to take up key abortion proposals since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Minnesota's Democratic leaders pledge to use their new control of the state Legislature to improve the economic security of residents and to quickly enact protections for abortion rights. Wednesday marked the first day of bill introductions of the 2023 session. The Democratic proposals include a plan for employer-funded paid family leave and sick time. House Speaker Melissa Hortman says it will help remedy the state’s workforce shortage. Their plans also include child care tax credits that leaders say will make it easier for parents to get back to work. A fast-track abortion rights bill will get its first hearing Thursday.
